The painted areas are a flat copper color. Most of the fixture is brass. We have been putting shade holders on most of the bare bulb fixtures that we get because there didn't seem to be much interest in the bare bulb look. Now that there are some good reproductions of antique bulbs available, some home restorers are looking for this look. This fixture is displayed with hand painted reproductions of antique light bulbs.
